Academics

Excellence in educating and inspiring young minds.

City Christian Schools strive for the highest goals in school achievement. Our students are tested yearly with the California Achievement Tests to measure their success. They regularly average from 1.5 to 2 grade levels above the national norms.

Our teachers are trained to meet the needs of today’s world. Their average tenure is nearly 10 years at City Christian School along with an average work experience of 14 years. Each teacher and employee must profess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Continued education for teachers is a must.

We stress English, math, science, history, music technology, speech, art, business, and physical education. High school Students also have the opportunity to earn “dual credits” from a variety of local colleges.

Technology

At City Christian Schools we are preparing your children for the future. We have excellent quality computers in 3 different labs. All three of our computer labs are equipped with filtered Internet accessibility.

Computers are introduced in Kindergarten.  Second through sixth grades have a structured computer class which sets the student up for success in transitioning into a more formal Jr. High class. Students become proficient with keyboarding and Microsoft Works including spreadsheets, database management, and word-processing. PowerPoint and Publisher are introduced.

In high school we offer computer at three levels. Beginning students learn to use PhotoShop and to design web pages. Students may opt to continue computer training by learning the Windows operating systems such as Access and Excel. They also utilize the Internet for research projects and use Microsoft Publisher to create the school’s monthly newsletter. Advanced students learn additional hardware and software skills by helping to maintain school computers and building computer systems. In addition they have the opportunity to create web pages and programs of their own through Visual Basic Programming.

Curriculum

Our curriculum consists of the latest up to date information and emphasizes a Christian perspective. We believe it is important to teach thinking skills as well as the fundamentals. Textbooks vary from Bob Jones, A Beka, ACSI, and Saxon. Our language program consists of Phonics, a strong spelling text and an emphasis on writing styles. Math curriculum stresses thinking skills as well as fundamental facts. Science includes many experiments, projects, life and physical sciences, and creation. A science fair is held every year along with an after school robotics club.

Fine Arts

In our art classes elementary students are introduced to artistic principles, creating a strong foundation for the ensuing years. This basic and consistent development of fundamentals produces an advanced student at an early age.

Students in the art department often win “Best of Show” in competitions. They compete in many mediums including portraits, watercolors, acrylics, oils, pen and ink and others.

Elementary students are introduced to general music beginning in Kindergarten through sixth grade. They learn music literacy, note reading, rhythm, pitch, form, melody, terminology and to play instruments such as percussion and recorders, preparing them for worship leading and band. They learn to be musically literate at a young age so they can be independent musicians when they leave the school.

Additional classes incorporate singing, playing instruments, creative movement, listening excerpts and games. The philosophy is to make class fun developing a love for music and a positive memory to carry on through adulthood.

Jr. High offers the opportunity to take choir, keyboarding, guitar, and percussion. They learn site reading, pitches, rhythm and training in performance behavior.

CCS is one of the few places a student will receive Worship Leadership Training as early as junior high and continuing through four years of high school. They learn to serve the student body by leading chapel worship with a variety of worship songs sung in harmony. In addition they are practiced in technical skills such as sound set-up, song show power points, back-up vocals, and following the worship leader. The incorporation of instruments produces a pleasing, finished product with all students learning the importance of teamwork.

Worship Leadership Training prepares students to lead and be a part of worship within their youth groups or local churches. Although the focus is on music and theory, the biggest focus is on their own heart and character. They are taught a worshipful relationship with the Lord, not just performance.

The Music Department competes at times in Oregon State Activities Association competitions with the public schools and also competes in ACSI events at the junior high level. K through 8 grades give two local concerts a year. Many students take individual lessons on campus from the City Bible School of Music instructors.  City Christian Schools has trained specialists teaching in their respective  music areas.
