The City Christian Preschool program at Rocky Butte has been going strong for eight years. For the first seven years we offered a half-day morning program for 3-5 year olds to gain experience in the classroom, preparing them academically for kindergarten.

In 2008 we successfully expanded our program by licensing with the state as a full day preschool. We now offer early morning arrival, a full day of preschool fun, and after school care. We are also open year round! Because of our longer hours of care we are able to serve a broad spectrum of families from our surrounding community. Families are able to choose a schedule that fits their needs and their children enjoy a safe, loving environment that prepares them for school.

This fall we were able to expand our preschool to our other City Bible Church campuses located in Tigard and Vancouver. Each campus is run with similar schedules and values based curriculum. We have a wonderful staff that engage with all our students and have a heart to see them learn and grow spiritually, academically, and emotionally. If you know of any families that are interested in a preschool program, have them check out our website or send them our way!

CCHS Computer Lab Looking Good!

Oct. 17th was a day of celebration for CCS! The school took possession of the first of new computers for the entire school. This was an answer to many years of praying for computer teacher Mrs. Barron.

The CCS computer lab received the first 30 of the IBM computers. They are excellent machines that come with LCD monitors.

Twenty-two computers are being placed in the library for student use. Every teacher and nearly every staff person will have a new computer at their desks for the first time. They have endured their ten year old computers with great patience, but now will have a fast, dependable computer to be able to handle their teaching duties much more efficiently.

In addition, ten powerful desktop computers will be placed in the old lab to be used to teach software for upper level classes. Thirty-one laptop computers on a mobile cart will be made available for classroom projects.

Through much research about the purchasing of computers, a huge blessing was put into place– all the money needed was loaned to CCS through our amazing board members.

Our school now has the opportunity to put on a school auction, March 13th, where all monies raised will go to pay our board back for the new equipment.

BOOK FAIR A LITERARY SUCCESS!

Our first annual Scholastic Book Fair was a marvelous success. The library was over flowing with books presenting an interest range from preschool through junior high. Students visited the library throughout the week, all finding something to put a spark in their eyes. Many returned, time after time, with friends, parents and grandparents in tow to share the excitement of finding a new treasure within the covers of the books.

The “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series was the hit of the fair. Students and teachers alike made want lists and purchases began early in the week. Christmas gifts, home library books and books for the classrooms began flying off the shelves. Interest was so strong that the sale was extended three days after Open House so all could get their chance to buy. A total of $2222 in book dollars was earned for the CCS library.

These new books will be available soon for your children to check out. We are looking for volunteers to help process the books. If you have an hour or ten hours to give, contact CCS librarian Sandee Swarner through the school.

Coach’s Corner

Wow! What a fall season we are STILL having. It has been a fun season for everyone! All teams have been successful and we are so proud of all our athletes!

So far we know that we have a Champion! Our JH soccer team made it all the way to the championship game and tied after 2 overtime periods (per rule). They are the Metro Christian League East/West Co-Champions! Great Job! Congratulations to coach Isaac Matei and his young squad. The skills that these young athletes are developing will serve us well in the next several years.

Our JH volleyball team was amazing! They had a great season! They worked hard and earned a spot in the Metro Christian League playoffs. They battled all season long and the same was the case in their playoff game. They managed to make it to the tiebreak game and lost 15-13. Oh, so close! We are very proud of you girls! Coach Molly White in her first season did a splendid job of teaching the girls fundamentals and a tenacity to play hard. Great Job!

Our HS is in the midst of strong playoff runs! The boys Soccer team defeated Horizon Christian and North Clackamas Christian to move to the third round of the Columbia River League District Playoffs. Outstanding performance for Coach John Millen and his team! Next game is Nov. 5th at Corbett with a chance to advance to the state tournament. Good job team! Keep up the great work!

In the first round of the District playoffs, the girls HS volleyball team defeated Portland Lutheran on Oct. 29th. The girls were defeated in their next two matches and were not able to continue on to state. The girls had a great season. Good job girls!

Wow! School is off to a wonderful start! Teachers are buzzing with excitement and plans for this year; chapels are on course to set the spiritual standard; the library has a new look; the music program is expanding and the sawdust is flying as Mr. Mason completes our new computer lab.

A successful magazine/cookie sale was a great benefit to our school. Profits from the elementary magazine sale will be used to improve their lunch area. Sixth and seventh grade students earned money towards their trip to Washington DC in the spring of 2011, and high school profits will be used towards our new library program.

CCS MAGAZINE SALE- FUN AND REWARDING!

It’s a weeple raid in the elementary school. Students get a little fuzzy creature called a weeple for selling a magazine. If students have their weeples with them during the “raid”, they can choose from a candy basket and draw cards to win candy and money.

Adult volunteers helped make the magazine sale profitable. From left, magazine representative, Regina Tiel, Joe Hoard, Rachelle Heckel and Ernie Flores.

The last two weeks have been filled with weeples, prizes, candy and money, $1’s, $2,s, $5’s, $10’s and $20’s from our annual magazine sale. In fact, kindergartner Alexa Boyer won the big prize of $100 with her spin of the prize wheel.

The magazine sale has come to a close for this year and we greatly appreciate those of you that actively participated. Forty-five percent of all sales becomes profit for the school, and we are excited about the difference this sale has made.

The 6th grade is our top selling class with an average of $141 in sales per person. Their profit will be placed in safe keeping towards their trip to Washington D.C. in March of 2010.

Magazine Sales Produces Funds for School – Prizes for Students

Sixth grade students joining the top sellers at the Pig-Out Party will include Adam Brown, Laurin Maurer, Noah Peterson, and Nicole Procopoi.

The 7th grade class also earned money towards the Washington, D.C. trip with Susie Traver leading the way. She sold $247 worth of magazines, while high salespeople Luke Anderson and Moises Tonis will join her at the Pig-Out Party.

High school and 8th grade profits will go towards our new computer program, with senior Ashley Nordstrom setting the standard for the high school at $251 in sales, and 8th grader Lindsey Quigley topping her classmates with $395 in sales.

Elementary students are looking forward to a new look in their lunch area, with 88 students in grades K-5 contributing to the profits. Braxton Swarner sold over $1000, for a school highest salesperson. Salespeople exceeding the $300 mark include Keeley Trainer, Jordon Johnson, Kayla Stickel, Madison Burnett, Victoria Ficker, and Alexa Boyer. Additional students earning the Pig-Out party include Jacob Ile, Ian Aalberg, Andrew Wong, Grace Cha, Chloe Magby, and Piper Hackler.

The 5th grade met the goal of 100% participation by students in that classroom, with the 4th and 2nd grades right behind them. Congratulations and many thanks to each person that participated.

The fun isn’t over yet. Still to come is the Pig-Out Party and overall prize day.

GO LIONS!!!

Here we are sports fans! It has been a great start to our fall sports seasons. We have a lot of action going on.

The junior high programs are off and running! Soccer is led by coach Isaac Matei, who is coaching his team on the heels of a strong run through the Metro Christian Junior High League. Coach Matei has good numbers with solid players that were on the team last year. So far the team has two wins and one loss as they prepare to go into league play.

The junior high volleyball team is also having a great start! With a good blend of 7th and 8th graders, these girls show a lot of promise. They have won 4 matches to only one loss and are currently on a 3 game winning streak. We are very pleased to have new coach, alumna Molly White working with the girls! She has been a big hit among our players.

The high school soccer teams are enjoying their seasons as well. They are working hard to develop the players all the while competing in a very tough 1A/2A/3A league. Returning coach John Millen is building his team up and preparing them for the road ahead. The team has been playing well to start the season and hopes to have a strong second half!

Our school volleyball team is off to a fantastic start. They currently have 6 wins and 1 loss in league play. They are in a very competitive league this year, hoping to finish strong at district playoffs earning a berth to State! Coach Lewellen is very proud of what the team has been able to accomplish so far. The team is also very grateful to have Faith Mason on the coaching staff!

The Cheer squad, coached by Shawna Heard, is enjoying this fall season as they are preparing for cheer at a competitive level. They of course will be gracing the sidelines during the winter season, but are also going to be competing against other cheer squads on a regular basis . We are very proud of their hard work and are looking forward to seeing them in action in the weeks to come!

Come out and take in the action! You will find that this year’s teams are very fun and exciting to watch!

GO LIONS!!!

Summer is now upon us and I am sure that each of you have some plans to enjoy the weather and the extra time. I pray that you will have some great family time and will return safely and refreshed. We have just completed an excellent year with many highlights, including trips to Washington DC, Mexico, and some great musicals. We saw most of our graduates heading to the colleges of their choice.

Our CAT scores returned with very encouraging results. All classes reported results above the national average in grade equivalency and overall the school averaged almost two years ahead of the national average.

We want to thank you parents for your support. We couldn’t teach your students to this degree without a good school/home partnership.

Every year we announce any staff changes that will be taking place when we resume school. We are happy to say that all of our main staff are planning to be on duty when school starts in the fall. There will only be some minor adjustments in some administrative and teacher’s aide positions.

I do want to tell you about an exciting change that we are making with one of our existing staff. We are expanding the job responsibilities of Faith Mason to include the duties of an Instructional Coordinator.

Instructional Coordinators by federal definition evaluate how well a school’s curriculum or plan of study meets students’ needs. Based on their research and observations of instructional practice, they recommend improvements. Instructional Coordinators research teaching methods and techniques and develop procedures to ensure that instructors are implementing the curriculum successfully and meeting program goals. They play a large role in improving the quality of education in the classroom.

Faith is well qualified to handle the requirements of this position. She currently holds two education degrees. One is a BS in Human Development and the second is a Master of Education. She is licensed at the Preschool -
8th level, the Middle School level, and finishing her High School level license this summer. She is very passionate about quality education and has done an excellent job teaching at City Christian School for the last eight years. She will continue to teach two English classes and Worship Leaders Training. The remainder of her time will be given to her new responsibilities.

Please keep us in your prayers this summer as we are working hard at making all the necessary preparations for next year.

Serving in Christ,
Edward Mason
Principal

Need Summer Child Care for your 3 – 5 year old? City Christian Preschool on the NE Rocky Butte Campus is an excellent option for your child care needs.

We recognize that due to our ever changing society, deciding where and how your preschooler’s foundation is cultivated is more important than ever. Our Summer Program is structured and focuses on educational activities. There will be thematic units such as bugs and animals along with outdoor exploration and science activities.

Classes are designed around a fun and caring environment where your child will have the opportunity to learn spiritual, academic, and social principles preparing them for kindergarten.

Whether you need half day, full day, extended care, or just a couple of days a week, this is an outstanding preschool your family will be excited about! It is led by a talented team, committed to excellence, character development and practical application setting your child up for success. It’s been a tremendous blessing to many families; I know it will be for yours as well.
