By Caroline Smith

The senior class of 2010 recently had the privilege of traveling to Mexico. Although the idea of a mission trip to Navajoa was in the back of every student’s mind, the foremost thought was a vacation. The journey started off smoothly with no hiccups in flight or attendance. The excellent planning of school Principal Mr. Ed Mason saw to that. It was fun and interesting to be surrounded by the nervous excitement caused by the looming adventure. I am proud to say that the respect and cooperation of each student made the traveling more of an enjoyment rather than a necessary hassle.
Upon landing in Tucson, Arizona, we were greeted by Pastor Enrique of Templo Calvario Church. He had been kind enough to join our party and ensure our safe commute to his city. The next day and a half we faced the long trek into Mexico. The frequent, yet fun stops along the way seemed to elongate the distance between our destination and us.
On our arrival at Templo Calvario, we got straight to work. The main intention of the trip was to serve the community. The best way we could do so turned out to be in repairing the church building. Plans were made, jobs appointed, and supplies bought. The next few days had everyone working long and hard. Periodic interruptions to our work were made for the allowance of fun, “tourist” things. Such activities included visiting a nearby mission and watching a parade. Our group also had the privilege, one evening, to join in the church service. The people were so friendly and welcoming that the pressure of the new environment and the language barrier slackened. Our own WLT class had the opportunity to lead that congregation in worship. The team had prepared a few songs in Spanish for the occasion, however, many adjustments were made and the students just went with the flow. The worship was fun and inventively combined Spanish and English songs to suit both groups. Pastor Enrique later insisted on introducing every visitor to the church members. Many students agree that meeting the people was one of their favorite moments of the trip.

The most fulfilling and rewarding part of our time in Mexico was the remodeling we did at Templo Calvario. The painting, building, sewing, and sweeping were nonstop for three days. The result of all our hard work was a lovely sight to see.
We left behind a newly built stage, freshly painted wall, and tasteful décor. International students Yumi Takeda and Nan Teonugul beautifully painted a beloved scripture above the Templo Calvario stage. Students and chaperones alike contributed their ideas and hard work to this sanctuary makeover.
Although the focus of the mission trip was to serve, give, and benefit the Navajoa community, we also benefited ourselves. The whole experience taught us to stretch ourselves and go out of our comfort zone. Being in a Spanish speaking country gave us the opportunity to use ridiculous gestures like a never-ending game of charades.
This journey showed us not only what we – as Americans – can be thankful for, but also what we – as Americans – can give. Before we went to Navajoa, Templo Calvario might not have had an amazing church building, but they had joy. They shared that joy with a small group from City Christian High School who might not have been there long, but learned so much.

Spanish Language and Culture

Learning About our Southern Neighbors

The Spanish I and Spanish II students have a lot of fun in class. They work hard to learn Spanish from the textbook, but their learning goes beyond that. The Spanish students learn the locations of all the Latin American countries. Each student chooses a country and throughout the year, learns about that country and shares their knowledge with the class through posters, reports, and oral presentations. The best part of the Spanish class is singing Spanish songs and tasting Hispanic foods. Though learning a new language is no easy task, the Spanish students know how to have fun while working hard. – by Mrs. Denise Syfrett

The Mystery of the Canopy Bed

A mystery surrounds the life of Amanda’s Great Aunt Libby, and to her dismay and frustration, no one has the answers that will help her solve it. Then she and her sister are mysteriously transported across time and space and stranded in the desert with a community of nomads. Having no other choice, the girls join these desert dwellers as they journey across seemingly endless stretches of arid hills and plains, becoming little more than servants to these strange people.
How will Amanda and Emily ever find a way to return to the world they know? And will their unbelievable adventure help them unravel the mystery surrounding their Great Aunt Libby?

CCS teacher Kathy Crow has taught sixth grade for fourteen years. This is her first book. Since its inception, she has read it aloud to each sixth-grade class she has taught. Students, boys and girls alike, have received it with enthusiasm and begged for a sequel. At this time, Ms. Crow has plans for four sequels to The Mystery of the Canopy Bed.

You can purchase The Mystery of the Canopy Bed at the Open House on Friday, May 7th, or you can contact Ms. Crow.

Coach’s Corner

Is Spring really going by this fast? This year has flown by. We are already staring Summer in the face!
We are in the late stages of our spring session and we are keeping an eye on our golfing team. They have been working to improve as individuals and as a team. We have a great bunch of guys turned out. 1st year coach Dave Chown is doing an outstanding job with the team. Good job, Coach!
The golf team has 6 players out and have had great golfing opportunities. Members of the golf team are Joe Boivin, Brion Lynch, Devon Peterson, Mikey Chown, Ryan Glanville and John O’Toole. Freshman Mikey Chown has been outstanding thus far in posting the highest score of the match on more than one occasion. As a team we have won some matches and been near the top in some matches. This all adds up to the potential to qualify as a team for state and definitely a good chance to at least have some individuals qualify.
The elementary track meet at the Portland Christian Invitational is coming up on May 28th. Our youngsters did a great job last year and expectations amongst them are high. We are excited to watch them perform again this year!
What a great school year this has been in our athletic department. We are so proud of our Athletes! It seems that there is a buzz of anticipation already for next year. It won’t be long!

Defining the American Dream!

In January, Gateway Elks Lodge sponsored an essay contest. The theme was “The American Dream: What Is It?” Two City Christian School students have received top honors at the state level. Congratulations to both students, Laurin Maurer and Adam Brown. Their essays are included below.

The American Dream: What Is It? by Laurin Maurer

“I am the American Dream. I am the epitome of what the American Dream
basically said. It said, you could come from anywhere and be anything
you want in this country. That’s exactly what I’ve done.”
-Whoopi Goldberg-

The American Dream has not changed much since the Mayflower sailed to America. It is still the dream of an opportunity for a better life.
The people who have immigrated to America have come for a reason. Many people came to escape the government, persecution, famine, and poverty. They also came for opportunity, a chance to be what they wanted to be.
The Pilgrims came to America for religious freedom. Some people came because of famine. Others came to escape a failing government or economy. Why did they come here? They came because America offered freedom, opportunity, and relative safety.
The American Dream has not died with those first to have it. It lives on in many hearts of Americans today. The American Dream is a strong motive that draws many people to America. Where would we be without the American Dream? Many American citizens today had relatives that came to America because of this dream. America has been built upon this. Therefore America, as we know it, would not exist if not for the American Dream. The only reason you and I are here today is because someone, possibly long ago, dreamt of freedom.

The American Dream: What Is It? by Adam Brown

“…I came to America…so that I might have a better way of life,
a more democratic way of life.
I wanted to live the American Dream
where if you worked hard and put your mind into the task
anything was possible.”
-Mel Martinez-

The American Dream to some people is only a saying, to others it is much more. It is the dream that all may be a citizen regardless of who they are; the dream that men and women can provide for their family; the dream where anyone can own a business. It is the hope that America can have freedom and liberty for all who enter. It helps us realize how fortunate we are. For the American Dream was not started by the fortunate, but by people who could not own a business, were not able to be a citizen, and whose salary was not enough to provide for their family. For all these people who at first could not, they now can be a citizen of a free country. Many would not be here if not for the American Dream that called their ancestors to America. While they were living in what they thought was their entitlement, others were living in a place where distress and deficiency of food was commonplace. The American Dream is what separates us from other countries. We must not complain, but be thankful for what we have, for we are living the American Dream.

The fifth grade class recently finished a unit on the regions of the United States. Their teacher, Mrs. Tompkins, had each student make an alphabet book about their chosen state. Included was information about state birds, flowers, capitals and important cities, and featured special tourist attractions.

The 5th grade then visited the first grade where they read their books and explained the pictures to the younger students, becoming teachers for the period and creating a fun time for both classes. Each 1st grader saw five different books.

Mrs. McCall’s first graders enjoyed this time very much. Here is what some of them had to say about the experience:

“The fifth graders read slow enough to understand.” – Weston

“We had to guess how much degrees.” – Isaiah

“I like all those pictures.” – Reece

“They read nicely so I could hear them read.” – Judah

“They showed us pictures.” – Victoria

“They are good artists.” – Udoka

Learning and Fun for 2nd Graders at Franz Bakery!

After all these years, the famous bread production line, right under the giant spinning loaf of Franz Bread that Portlanders grew up with, has achieved the status of a local landmark.

Engelbert Franz and his brother Joseph bought the NE 11th Street bakery location in 1906 and quickly grew the company to one of the largest in Portland. The company has evolved into the largest bakery in Oregon and one of the most modern baking operations in the United States. Today, Franz is the largest independently-owned bakery in the United States.

Tour groups of between ten and sixty people are welcomed daily. The tour consisted of a brief history of the Franz Family Bakeries and a half hour tour of the facility. Students then enjoyed a snack of bread, butter and apple juice and were given gift bags to take home.

For elementary school tours, Franz has an interactive learning center with books to read and mind teaser work sheets.

A Walk in the Park

Successful Fundraiser

For one amazing night our Ivy Hall was transformed to look like a “Walk in the Park”. This transformation took place with the help of Marc Ishibashi and his team of students, Carolina Hogland and her team of decorators along with our very own art teacher Gabe Smith who painted a beautiful floor to ceiling picture and Janice Dorszynski who teamed up with Mrs. Swarner, Mrs. Sinclair, and Mrs. Heard, creating a stunning water feature.

We also had very good food provided by Wanda Goulter along with great auction items, beautiful music performed by Chris Pitoyo, Nicole Procopoi, Kathy Tompkins, Grady Daniels, and Charles Canary. There was a balloon pop game, laughter, and fellowship. We were also very blessed to have Blazer Alumni Michael Harper as our auctioneer – he really knew how to get the crowd going.

One of the highlights of the night came when Lori Hews won the Disneyland getaway for only $20! All together our school was able to raise over $20,000 for computer software and our technology program.

A special thank you to all the school businesses, parents, and teachers that donated to our class baskets.

Thank You for taking the time to ask your friends and our local businesses for donations.

Thank You to the countless volunteers: including Ron and Kathy Anderson, Carolina Hoglund, Tina Salveta, Allen Snyder, Corey & Sandee Swarner, Chris Walters, Colleen Dehart, Marc Ishibashi, Class Parents, Teachers, Staff and students – it really was all your hands laboring together that made this year’s auction a success. We could not have done it without all of you!!!

So…….. since we did such a great job this year – WE WILL BE HAVING AN AUCTION AGAIN NEXT YEAR!

BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR MORE
INFO TO COME!

A New Era in Computer at CCS

It began with a vision for computer at CCS. That vision is now reality as the 5th grade class opened up the very first classroom laptop computers. The CCS auction that was held recently is helping to provide this new tool.

Until now, the only Internet connected computers for student use were in the high school computer lab. Since there is a high demand for the lab, elementary students had little access to them or to the library which is also used by the high school. Now, under instruction from their teachers, students can research information for reports and projects.

The 31 laptops are wireless and took some time to initially set up, but they are now ready to go and are expected to be in high demand in the elementary, junior high, and high school classrooms.

Two periods were spent getting acquainted with the software and hardware. Students will now bring in the computers on their own and set them up.

What did the 5th grade think of having laptops in their classroom? Here are some of the comments:

“It was so cool to be the first ones to try out the laptops and it was fun!!!!” – Giorgi

“It was fun to use the laptops. Thank you school board!!!!!!!!!!!” – Braxton

“It was so much fun using the laptops. We could do research and even play a few games. They are great.” – Baine

‘It was very fun being the first class to use the laptop. We did Science and Heritage. We played games and had a lot of fun. Thank you for buying the laptops.” - Josef

“The computers were very fun to use and we got to do some research and look things up. “ – Chidinma

“We all loved the laptops and the best thing is we made history!” – Madeline

“It was fun using the laptop by ourselves and learn about Laptop and Internet.” – Joon

“It was very Awesome to use the laptops.” – Grady

GRANDPARENTS’ DAY

Our grandparents tell us it was a day to remember. Proven again and again throughout the day, was our theme verse, “A good man leaves an inheritance (legacy) to his children’s children.” Proverbs 13:22

The day began with the elementary students meeting their grandparents for pictures together. They rejoined their class for the grand entrance into Ivy Hall where the grandparents awaited. The children sang two beautiful songs accompanied by fellow students on instruments. Mr. Mason stood to welcome our guests and made a special announcement-the recognition of the newest grandparent. Hayden Riley Mason was born at 4 a.m. the previous morning, giving Mr. Mason his first granddaughter. What a fun moment to share.

The assembly continued with cute, clever and convincing presentations by the students as they honored their grandparents. The children sat with their Nana’s and Papa’s as a story was read. Our guest reader this year was Darlene Erickson, mother and grandmother of the Mason family. Cynthia Seid, grandmother of first grader Callen Coleman, won the door prize drawing, winning two free admission tickets to Wildlife Safari, an animal park located near Roseburg, Oregon.

After the assembly, students and grandparents alike went to the classrooms where they made keepsake photo frames for the photo that had been taken earlier that day. Lunch time followed with grandparents sharing the occasion with the students. Some brought their lunch to “picnic” at school while others took advantage of the coupons submitted by neighboring businesses: Subway at 103rd and Halsey; Applebee’s and Izzy’s at Gateway.

Activities in the afternoon had a new focus as grandparents of the junior high and high school students gathered. Our student worship team opened the assembly. Awards were presented by the VFW, to junior high students that won an essay contest on “When is the Right Time to Honor a Veteran?” Devvon Montigue placed third at district level, receiving a $25 certificate and Lola Sosanya won second, receiving a $50 award.

The afternoon continued with students nominating their grandparents as “Grandparent of the Year” with moving tales of heroics, service, and sacrificial love. We were many times moved to tears with the hearing of the roles grandparents had played in the lives of their families. Nominated names were drawn for prizes. Winners were Josefina Rosas, grandmother of Nathan Jump, who won a night at Hockanson’s Guest House Bed and Breakfast.

Sylvia Winther, nominated by Allison Jones, won a gift certificate from Stanfords. Jonah Frecke nominated Dave Andreeychuk who won a certificate from Sizzler, while Penny Kerns, grandmother of Deven Peterson, received a hat from Goorman’s, quality hat makers for over a century.

Mr. Powlison brought a “Fifties Trivia” which was entertainment enjoyed by many, and Aubrey Evans’ grandmother, Helen Abernathy, won a Starbucks card for the most correct answers. Roses were given to each nominated grandparent and to others receiving special recognition.

All of these wonderful activities and awards tell only half the story. The day was filled with smiles, hugs, and heartwarming stories. Lasting memories were created as grandparents were honored for the legacy they have created for their grandchildren.

Thank you parents, grandparents, and volunteers for making this day a wonderful success!

Being an American: Responsibility

By Danielle Henry

The Bill of Rights Institute offered a nation-wide essay contest entitled “Being An American.” The essay asked high school students to reflect on the rights and responsibilities of American citizens and consider what civic values are necessary to carry out our nation’s founding principles.

Junior Danielle Henry, a student in Ms. Faith Mason’s English class, received a check for $250 for her essay on American Responsibility. Her essay was one of the top 90 in the whole United States.

In the course of history, many values have been discovered to be beneficial to both a country and a person as a whole. Several acceptable examples include initiative, justice, courage, respect, freedom, and many others. However, in my opinion, responsibility is the root of all these things. Without responsibility, America would have given up early on when facing the overwhelming odds of becoming a new nation. Without responsibility, the founding fathers would have left the work of creating the United States to someone else. Even today, no American would have any desire to serve their country without responsibility in their values. Responsibility is one of the most important values any successful American should have.

To truly begin to understand how responsibility has shaped our nation, we must look back to where it all began: The Declaration of Independence. Official separation from England was becoming more and more necessary as the Revolutionary War raged on, even though many felt that the colonies were not ready yet to unite under the single cause of freedom. Nonetheless, the Declaration of Independence was passed on July 2, 1776 (Writing the Declaration of Independence). Even though the idea behind the Declaration of Independence was ridden with uncertainty and possible methods of failure, these patriots believed so strongly in their new freedom that they took the responsibility that came along with it.

An excellent example of someone who embodies the value of responsibility is America’s first president, George Washington. His presence is often noticed in America’s history, whether it be fighting in the French and Indian War or in the Revolutionary War. Even though he wanted to retire to his home after the Revolutionary War ended, he realized that the Articles of Confederation did not contain laws adequate enough to rule the new nation. Instead of going back home and letting the situation work itself out, he became an important advocate for a new Constitution, and even became the first President of the United States (Biography of George Washington). One wonders what could have happened if he had not taken the responsibility to fix the Articles of Confederation, and had gone home instead of becoming the first president. Responsibility ruled the life of George Washington, and we owe much of America’s greatness to him.

The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered, perhaps, as deeply, as finally, staked on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people (Civic Values).

I agree with George Washington’s statement. America is made “by the people and for the people” (The Declaration of Independence). If this nation is made for that purpose, then should not each individual take responsibility for America’s destiny, even if they are not in public office? I believe I should be a responsible American by working hard to reach my goals, by learning from my failures, by encouraging others to be responsible too, and by making the other values that stem off from responsibility a focus and a moral compass in my life. This might be an excellent time to ask the question “What if everyone did that?” America’s future would be bright indeed if everyone took responsibility and made it their focus, both in our government and in our individual lives.

Without responsibility, we lack the foundation for every other value essential to being an American. Responsibility made the Declaration of Independence a success and not something to be ashamed of. It made George Washington’s life successful and gave him incentive to make his country great, and if I decide to be responsible, I have no doubt it will make me a successful American as well. Being an American is something everyone should be proud of, and if we are truly proud of the great freedom we have, we will accept the responsibility that comes along with it and the success that it bears fruit to.

GREAT JOB LIONS!!!

Well, we have come to the end of our Winter Season. I am so proud of all of our teams. The Boys Varsity Basketball team made it to the State Playoffs! They lost a hard fought game in the first round, but came away knowing that they had given it their best. The main focus for the boys this year was to please the Lord with their effort. They certainly met that goal. Every night the boys played their hearts out and it resulted in a great year. With 18 wins on the season, the boys have much to be pleased with. The City Christian Community is proud of you boys!

The Girls Varsity Basketball team made it to the District Playoffs and had a great showing. In the state qualifying game, the girls lost a heart-breaker. They battled with Columbia Christian and lost by two points for the chance to go to state! The girls had an outstanding season with 16 wins! Again, we are proud of you girls!

We are certainly impressed with our Cheer Squad. They had a super season! There were 9 girls and it was great to see them on the sidelines, so spirited and all decked out in Blue and Gold making our side of the gym look and sound great!

Girls Junior High Basketball earned a spot in the MCL Junior High League playoffs as the #4 seed team. They played a hard fought game but came up short. The Boys Junior High Basketball team also earned a spot in the MCL playoffs as the #1 seed team and have defeated their first two opponents! They are in the Championship game! GO LIONS!!! We wish them well! Out of 24 teams, our junior high teams have had great seasons! We are proud of you both!

All of our athletic teams should be very proud. We want to honor each of our teams and if you get the chance, please just let them know how much you appreciate their efforts on the court as well as their efforts to maintain their grades, friendships, family life and all the while trying to keep the Lord first in their lives.

GO LIONS!!!!

GO LIONS!!!

City Christian boys varsity team won the St. Paul Christmas Tournament held at St. Paul on Dec. 28 and 29. They beat Crow HS in the semifinals and St. Paul in the championship game!

The City Christian Lions are rolling into February with a roar! The junior high basketball teams have kicked off their game schedule after working hard in practice through much of December. Both teams are doing well. The boys are coached by Joe Johnson, who is in his first year as a coach. At this point in the season the boys have a 4-0 record.
The girls are coached by returning coach, Nicole Damazio, and she has led them to a 3-1 record. Of course, both teams are working at fundamentals with the hopes of being ready for the high school team in the near future!
The girls varsity basketball team is competing very well under 2nd year head coach, Jeff Thompson. The girls have a 10-6 overall record and are playing very well. The team consists of 3 seniors, 2 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 2 freshmen. Their strength isn’t in numbers, but in talent. This team has loads of talent and will be a force as we get closer to district play. They have key games coming up on the schedule. Come on out and watch. League home games are 4:00 for JV boys, 5:30 for varsity girls and 7:00 for varsity boys.
The boy’s JV team has 5 wins and 7 losses in the season. Coach Lewellen is pleased with their progress and looks forward to their continued development. The varsity boys team is sitting with a 13-6 overall record as they are halfway through their season. They have more than doubled last year’s win totals! The key has been strong play from top to bottom on the varsity squad. The team has great depth with 5 seniors, 3 juniors, and 3 freshmen.
And now I would like to share a note from “The Sidelines.” As you know, our young athletes can get very busy with homework, youth group, family, sports, etc. It is important that we continue to encourage them to not get discouraged, not to give up, and to put Christ first in all of their busyness. The athletes also can have a tendency to put their health on a back burner. Encourage them to drink lots of healthy fluids (water) and to eat healthy food as well.

Please come out and support these great student-athletes! They are working so hard and deserve an audience! Thank you! For game dates and times, go to citychristianschool.com.

Teacher’s Aides – Serving Staff and Students!

This article is devoted to honoring a teacher’s best friend, their teacher’s aide (T.A.). T.A.’s earn one credit, but make teacher’s lives so much easier, giving them more time to do lesson plans, teach and help their students. Some are volunteer aides helping to tutor other students in various subjects.

Caroline Smith is an amazing T.A. for Ms. Mason. She faithfully manages the unending stacks of papers that cycle in from English 10, English 11, and English 12. Because she has a wonderful grasp of English and excellent critical thinking, she is capable of helping with spelling, vocabulary, writing, and literature. “I’m so privileged to have Caroline, and I know that I couldn’t teach all three classes without her,” says Ms. Mason.

Brianna Carlisle serves as the Worship Coordinator in Ms. Mason’s Worship Leaders Training class. This is a strategic position that keeps the class running smoothly from week to week. Brianna takes care of all sheet music and team scheduling, works with worship leaders to prepare for their lists, and sets an example of a worshipper who passionately loves the Lord and pleases Him in her lifestyle.

Debora Nitu is an aide for Development Coordinator Mrs. Becky Montigue. Her character and skills have been truly an added measure of help to both Mrs. Montigue and to the office. She always does an excellent job with the work given to her. She takes direction with a positive attitude and works diligently until the task is complete.
- Mrs. Montigue says, “I feel truly blessed to have such an outstanding TA!”

Riley Thompson transferred to the office as T.A. and is doing a great job! Riley was their T.A. last year, and they are happy to have her back. She adds an additional friendliness to the office. They didn’t have to train her. She already knew what to do and does it well.

They are excited to have Jessica Damazio as an office aide this year. She is doing a great job at the front desk. They appreciate her willingness. She is a great asset to the office.

Jessica is also a T.A. for CCHS/CCS art teacher Ms. Gabrielle Smith. Jessica has been a wonderful help to both teacher and art students, though she claims not to be artistic. She is always willing to learn and help students with their artwork by encouraging them. “The thing I appreciate the most is her willingness to serve.” – Ms. Smith

Elisa Nitu does an excellent job as an office aide. They can always count on her to do a variety of jobs with no mistakes.

A BIG thank you to all our office aides. You help keep the office running smoothly and are a great asset to the school.” – Mrs. Bushard

Jordan Boivin, Joseph Boivin, Anna Yoon, and Sumitra Crow are math T.A.’s. They help by assisting students in math classes throughout the school. Jordan has worked with students in several different classes including General Math, Math Foundations, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra 2.

Sumitra Crow works with Calculus students. She is very patient in working one-on-one with students. She also helps in many other capacities such as filing, typing, sorting, and other odd jobs that need to be done.

Joseph Boivin works exclusively with students in the Algebra 2 class. He also helps with handing out and collecting classroom work as well as with filing.

Anna Yoon has worked in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2. She is especially excellent in working with new international students who need help learning the English words for advanced mathematical concepts.

Students in general math are at all levels. It is difficult to help them all without volunteer tutors. I greatly appreciate them” – Mrs. Barron

Morgan Lewellen is a T.A. for Mr. Powlison during third period. She does a great job with his papers, for World History, American Studies, Health, and Bible.

Cody Whitehead always has a challenge helping Mr. Powlison with his many classes. He has made life so much easier for the 8th grade teacher.

Elizabeth Feather has done exceptionally well as Mr. Powlison’s third-period aide. She too assists with helping to organize the paperwork.

It takes time to input all the grades in my grade book and into the computer. I thank God everyday for my teacher’s aides.” – Mr. Powlison

Elki Hoard is a real Godsend to Mrs. Straup in the 2nd grade! She corrects papers, answers hands, or does a reading group; and she does it all very well. The children love her because she is so loving, kind, and helpful.

“I enjoy seeing what a wonderful girl Elki has become and feel that Elki will be successful in all that she does in the future.” – Mrs. Straup

Third grade teacher Mrs. Sinclair appreciates Ryan Surratt for helping her out with things that may seem insignificant to a senior; however, it is what allows her to get home in time for dinner! Thanks, Ryan!

Patrick Meehl has been a breath of fresh air since he has joined the third grade troops. He has assisted with the reading groups. Maybe he should become a teacher?!

It is so good to have Jordan Shaddy (4th period) and Lorrissa Lewellen (8th period) assisting me in the athletic department! They have been helpful with little projects “here and there,” anything from opening locker-room doors, fetching equipment, sweeping and mopping the gym floor, making phone calls, cleaning up after others, emptying trash cans, carrying concession supplies, inventorying of equipment and uniforms, etc. They are great company, too.

“I am so grateful for them. Thank you, Jordan! Thank you, Lorrissa! I love my T.A.s!!”

Ashley Nordstrom is very much appreciated by Mrs. Syfrett, 10th grade homeroom teacher. She is willing to do a variety of things to assist in class. She helps file and keep papers organized. Ashley makes copies, helps with paperwork, and organizes projects when needed. Ashley also has a great singing voice and helps lead Spanish 1 class in singing Spanish songs.

Marlana Collins is a wonderful teacher’s aide. She comes in everyday and helps Mrs. Syfrett correct math homework. She is a great organizer and helps organize files. She is very talented and has been great at making posters as examples for Mrs. Syfrett’s classes. Marlana is a joy to have around, always willing to help with anything.

Allison Jones works with Mrs. McCall in the first grade room. She helps students read their work and write their answers. Allison is very patient and kind. Some of the students give her a hug when she comes in the room. The children love her.

The many stacks of papers to grade in 7th grade can be overwhelming at times for Mrs. Ball. Jaleece Williams came into her classroom and jumped right in with little training to help cut through some of the stacks with ease. She is equally at home grading, copying papers, helping students, or running any errands that are needed. “She has been a real blessing to me.” – Mrs. Ball

2010 SPELLING BEE

On Friday, January 22, CCS sent 16 students between 1st and 8th grades to the ACSI Spelling Bee which was hosted by Willamette Christian School in Turner, OR.

Eight schools attended, with approximately 200 students competing. In each grade, ribbons were awarded for 2nd through 4th place as well as a trophy awarded for 1st place. Students being awarded 1st or 2nd place in the 5th through 8th grades went on to compete for 1st through 4th place slots in the Regional competition.

Winners will then go on to compete at District competition in Vancouver, WA later this year.

Our students worked hard and were very excited to attend this special event. Third grader Taylor Jones earned a 3rd place ribbon for her efforts, David Ile received a 2nd place ribbon in the 7th grade competition as well as 4th place in the Regional competition, and Abraham Miranda achieved 2nd place in the 8th grade competition as well as 3rd place in the Regional competition.
It was another successful year of window painting for the CCHS art classes. Each year Miller Paint Co. hires the CCHS art class to paint their Christmas window decorations.

Ms. Gabrielle Smith took her students out in the sometimes chilly weather to earn money for special art projects.

It’s Christmas Around the World

With help from teacher Mrs. Tompkins and parent helpers, the 5th grade celebrated Christmas with food and party favors from many countries all over the world. There was fish from Scandinavia and special chocolates from England: lots of new tastes for students who had fun trying some of the new foods.

Worship Leadership Training
A Day of Service

On Friday, Dec 4th, we all met at the school at 6:15 and headed down to Portland Rescue Mission to serve breakfast to the homeless. Some students served, others greeted and filled coffee, still others took the used food trays, and two students even cooked the French toast on the grill.

In addition to serving breakfast, several students took down and put away the Thanksgiving decorations and hauled all of the Christmas decorations from storage so it could be set up.

After breakfast was over, we all jumped in and cleaned the kitchen/dinning area.

Next, we drove to Vancouver and had a big breakfast of our own at Mr. Mason’s house, hosted by Ms. Mason and her sister Christy.

Finally, we went to Columbia Heights on the Knoll and sang Christmas songs for the seniors’ Holiday Brunch. Caroline Smith sang a beautiful solo – Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

The choir prepared two songs and then we and the seniors all joined together for several traditional Christmas carols. This is our second time singing at Columbia Heights, and they are hoping we make it into an annual Christmas tradition.

It was an eventful day of service, and we all had lots of fun!

CCS Staff Celebrates Christmas

The yearly creator of the staff feast, Mrs. Nancy Foster, with donations from the staff, again outdid herself. The food was fabulous, the décor peaceful and Christmassy and the fellowship unsurpassed.

Principal’s Party
An Afternoon at the Bowling Lanes

Students from 2nd through 8th grade enjoyed an afternoon of bowling with their friends. Students earned the outing with good grades in the 1st quarter of school.

No one seemed to care who beat who. Just being out of school and having fun with friends was enough.

On Wednesday, Nov. 25th, the entire school took half or part of the day to celebrate Thanksgiving. Parties with food and special art work were favorites with the elementary. The seventh grade enjoyed a special movie, and the high school went to lunch together and then enjoyed a talent show in the Chapel.

Pig Out Party – Magazine Sales Reward

Twenty-seven students earned a spot at the “Pig Out Party” on November 3rd by selling 12 or more items during the Fall fundraiser. At the Pig Out Party, they were able to enjoy all the pizza, soda, and ice cream they could eat – and did they eat! Baskin & Robbins on Halsey graciously donated the ice cream for this event and the kids LOVED it!

They also brought their “best dressed” pigs to compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes. First place went to Keeley Trainer in 2nd grade for her pig in a chicken costume; tying for second place was Kindergartener Alexa Boyer with pig in a princess costume and 2nd grader Caleb Hoglund with a GI Joe pig. After their tummies were full, the kids orchestrated their own pig races, which was quite entertaining!

Great Job 8th Graders!

Our eighth grade class wrote papers telling when and how is the right way to honor our veterans. We entered several of those papers in a national contest through the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Three of our students placed in the district level, and one of the students placed first in regional. Way to go, Sargon Smith! His paper has been forwarded to the state level competition. The names of the three district winners will be announced at our Grandparent’s Day celebration on Wednesday, February 24th.

CCS Family Auction Update

Questions – contact Kathy Anderson 503-257-5932 or Hanna Burns 503-281-4634.

Table Sponsors – The Goal Is 20 Sponsors

 Coach’s Corner

Hello City Christian Lions fans! Whoohoo! What a great fall session we had. Last month you read about the successes of our JH and HS teams. Both High School Soccer and Volleyball came up just one game shy of heading to state. We are so proud of all our teams!

5th and 6th grade boys and girls are already mid-way through their basketball seasons and they are having a lot of fun while winning some games. Several games have been very close and come down to the last minute of the game. The boys are coached by Tim Porter and the girls by Nicole Damazio. We are excited to see our young athletes developing skills that will prepare them for the road ahead when they will some day take the court as high school athletes and represent the mighty City Christian Lions!

Junior High boys started practice on November 30th and the girls on December 1st. Both teams are looking to be very strong. The head coach for the boys is Joe Johnson. Name sound familiar? He plays for Portland Bible College men’s basketball team. He will be assisted by Tim Porter. The girls are coached by Nicole Damazio as she returns for her second year in a row.

November 9th marked the first day of winter season practices and both the boys and girls High School teams have begun the preparation for what is expected to be a very good basketball season. Lots of excitement surrounds this season as both teams are primed to make a run at and through the playoffs. The first game was on November 30th for the girls and December 1st for the boys. One of the highlights among many in the season is the “Battle for the Gold”. This is the first ever GOLDFISH BOWL. It is a friendly rivalry with league competitor Life Christian Lions. Winner takes home the live goldfish in a bowl and babysits it until hosting it the next year. Should be fun! Also, homecoming is on January 8th. Mark your calendars.

We are looking forward to an entertaining,
competitive and fun season. Come out and
support your City Christian Lions!
